What Makes Cahors Malbec Special?
Although many people associate Malbec with Argentina, the grape has much deeper roots here in South-West France.
In the Lot, Malbec is traditionally known as Auxerrois or Côt. To carry the Cahors AOP designation, a red wine must contain at least 70% Malbec, although many local producers create wines made entirely from the grape.
Cahors Malbec is often deeper, more structured and earthier than its Argentine counterpart. Depending on where the grapes are grown and how the wine is made, you may discover flavours of blackberry, plum, black cherry, violet, spice and liquorice.
Historically, the wine became known as the “black wine of Cahors” because of its exceptionally dark colour and depth.
A Landscape Shaped by the River Lot
The vineyards stretch westwards from Cahors along the beautiful Lot Valley, passing through wine-producing villages including Luzech, Parnac, Prayssac, Puy-l’Évêque, Grézels and Vire-sur-Lot.
The winding river, limestone plateaux and different levels of river terraces create a fascinating variety of soils and growing conditions. This is why two Cahors Malbec wines can taste remarkably different, even when the vineyards are only a short distance apart.

Vineyards to Discover Near Larroque Haute Gîtes
There are numerous independent vineyards and historic estates within easy reach of Larroque Haute. Some offer informal tastings, while others provide guided tours, food pairings or walks through the vines.
Clos Triguedina
Located near Puy-l’Évêque, Clos Triguedina is a historic family estate with a long tradition of producing Cahors wine. Its range provides an excellent introduction to the different styles and expressions of Malbec found within the appellation.
Château du Cèdre
Situated at Vire-sur-Lot, Château du Cèdre is known for its thoughtful approach to winemaking and elegant expressions of Malbec. It is a particularly interesting stop for visitors who want to learn more about how soil, climate and winemaking influence the finished wine.
Château de Chambert
Set among extensive vineyards near Floressas, Château de Chambert combines an impressive setting with a strong focus on organic and biodynamic viticulture. Depending on availability, visitors may be able to enjoy tastings, tours and other wine-related experiences.
Cahors Malbec Lounge
If you are spending the day in Cahors itself, the Cahors Malbec Lounge is an excellent place to learn more about the appellation and discover wines from different producers in one location.
These are just a few possibilities. Smaller family-run estates can be equally memorable, particularly when the winemaker has time to explain the history of the property and the character of each vintage.

How to Plan a Relaxed Wine-Tasting Day
One of the pleasures of the Lot is that there is no need to rush. Rather than trying to visit several vineyards in a single day, choose one or two and combine them with a market, village or leisurely lunch.
A lovely day might begin with a local market in Prayssac or Puy-l’Évêque, followed by a drive through the vineyards and a pre-booked tasting. Afterwards, enjoy lunch at a countryside restaurant or beside the River Lot before returning slowly through the valley.
If visiting Cahors, allow time to walk through the historic centre and see the magnificent Pont Valentré. You can then stop at the Cahors Malbec Lounge or visit a vineyard on your journey back to Larroque Haute.
Remember that French drink-driving limits are strict. Nominate a driver, limit the amount you taste or ask the vineyard whether samples can be provided for you to enjoy later.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Every season offers a different experience.
Spring brings fresh green vines, wildflowers and comfortable temperatures for exploring. During summer, the vineyards are full of life and the surrounding villages host markets, festivals and outdoor events.
Late summer and early autumn are particularly atmospheric as the grapes ripen and the harvest approaches. Autumn also brings beautiful colours, quieter roads and cooler evenings — perfect for returning to your gîte and enjoying a bottle beside the fire.
Even outside the main tourist season, many estates welcome visitors by prior arrangement.
Food to Enjoy with Cahors Malbec
Cahors Malbec pairs beautifully with the rich flavours of South-West France. Local restaurants may serve it alongside duck, confit, grilled meat, cassoulet, mushrooms, walnuts and mature cheeses.
You do not need to plan a formal meal to enjoy it. A bottle purchased directly from a vineyard is equally lovely with fresh bread, local cheese and charcuterie on your private terrace.
